On July 26th, 2018, Senator Marco Rubio (R-Florida) spoke on the Senate floor about Federal Drug Adminstration (FDA) regulation of premium cigars. Rubio’s speech was part of the 2019 Federal Spending discussion, allowing Senators to address the Senate on topics of interest to them. Rubio vehemently supported cigar manufacturers and retailers in Florida and the United States. On March 23rd, 2018, our “friends” at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a notice to the public seeking “additional input, scientific data on patterns of use, and resulting public health impacts of premium cigars.” It seems continually nagging of our legislature and their discussion with the FDA have caused the FDA to potentially reconsider their regulation. On September 14th, 2017, the House of Representatives approved a Bill exempting premium cigars from regulation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)! The Bill now goes to the Senate for approval. According to Skopos Labs, the Bill has a 44% chance of being enacted. This could be great news for U.S. cigar smokers. Unfortunately, this is not as cool as it sounds.
